I was waiting for the kitchen to open; the afternoon sun was soft against the river’s surface. With a cold glass of beer in my hand, standing outside a busy traditional Czech restaurant, I thought I had mixed up my glass with the stranger’s beside me. He noticed my expression and joked that they hadn’t put anything in mine. But there was something in it; my solitude, and plenty of bubbles. Here, they like bubbles in their beer. Not so sure about my solitude. I was drawn to the shape of the glass they use for their beer. Round, fat, easy in the hand, it felt right. Later, I read that these Czech mugs are generally called a krýgl, though sometimes they’re referred to as sklenice s uchem, which means “glass with an ear.” A fun way to put it. I wanted this object to be part of my collection. Pitstop is a snapshot of that moment. It is more than a bubbly “glass with an ear”  it’s a memory of solitude in a city, a quiet pause where you can almost hear the bubbles rise.
